Man’s Best Friend

It might seem somewhat strange when you really take a moment to think about the sight of a dog being present at a birth. Some may view this scenario as unsanitary or perhaps even chaotic. Yet, these loyal creatures possess an innate sense of what the moment entails. Often, they appear anxious and excited, their emotions bubbling beneath the surface. Sometimes, you can even catch a glimpse of it reflected in their eyes as they attempt to conceal their feelings from the laboring mother. They intuitively know that change is on the horizon, and they eagerly anticipate the arrival of their new companion, their new best friend, and a little person they will take on the instinctive role of protector for. Many times, you will find yourself witnessing a sweet puppy dog coming forward to offer a gentle lick or a reassuring sniff in between the laboring mother's contractions. It is an incredibly beautiful thing to observe during the calm and quiet moments of a home birth. After that brief moment of connection, the dog often retreats to its designated spot in the corner or just on the other side of the bedroom door, patiently waiting. They remain in a state of anticipation, eager to be invited back in, waiting for the moment when they will be told it is okay to come and check on the precious new baby. Birth is a profound gift that is shared by all living beings, both human and animal. We all experience similar physiological changes and hormones as we welcome our babies into the world. A home birth is truly a gift, and being able to share this sacred experience with your animal companion, who can provide comfort and support throughout the intensity of labor, is nothing short of pure bliss. This is just one more compelling reason to consider having your baby at home, surrounded by the people and animals you cherish and who love you in return.
