The Perfect Birth Team: Why Pairing a Doula with Your Midwife is a Game-Changer
Midwife Jolene and Mallory Villafuerte, The Crunchy-ish Doula, partner to provide East Texas families with expert care and emotional support during childbirth. Find out why this collaboration makes all the difference!
When preparing for the life-changing experience of childbirth, assembling the right support team is crucial. As you consider your options, you may wonder about the roles of different birth professionals and how they work together to ensure a safe, empowering, and memorable experience. Today, we're shining a spotlight on why pairing a midwife with a doula can make all the difference for your birth journey.
Midwife Jolene and I, Mallory Villafuerte (a.k.a. The Crunchy-ish Doula), have partnered to bring East Texas families the best of both worlds: the expert care of a midwife and the emotional and physical support of a doula. Here's why this dynamic duo can transform your birthing experience.
What Does a Midwife Do?
A midwife is a healthcare professional specializing in pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. Midwife Jolene brings years of medical expertise and hands-on experience to ensure your pregnancy and birth are safe and healthy. She monitors your baby’s development, manages potential complications, and provides personalized prenatal care. During labor, she focuses on clinical aspects such as monitoring vitals, delivering the baby, and addressing any medical needs that may arise.
What Does a Doula Do?
As your doula, my role is to offer continuous emotional, physical, and informational support throughout your pregnancy, labor, and postpartum period. From creating a birth plan to providing comfort measures like massage and breathing techniques, I’m here to help you feel confident and empowered. Unlike midwives, doulas don’t handle medical tasks; instead, we focus entirely on your comfort, advocacy, and emotional well-being.
Why Both Are Essential
While midwives and doulas have distinct roles, their collaboration creates a holistic care approach that addresses every aspect of your birthing experience. Here’s how they complement each other:
1. Holistic Care
Your midwife ensures the medical side of your birth is handled expertly, while your doula provides emotional and physical support.
Together, we ensure you feel safe, supported, and in control, addressing both clinical and personal needs.
2. Continuous Support
A doula stays with you throughout your labor, offering encouragement, comfort measures, and a calming presence.
Midwives often balance clinical responsibilities, which may require stepping in and out. Your doula bridges the gap, ensuring you’re never alone.
3. Personalized Advocacy
As your doula, I help you communicate your birth preferences to your midwife and other care providers.
Midwives appreciate having a doula on the team to ensure you feel heard and supported without compromising medical care.
4. Better Birth Outcomes
Studies show that having both a midwife and a doula can lead to lower rates of medical interventions, such as cesarean sections, and higher satisfaction with the birth experience.
Creating Your Birth Dream Team
Midwife Jolene and I share a commitment to making your birth experience as positive and empowering as possible. With her clinical expertise and my nurturing support, you’ll have a team dedicated to honoring your choices, easing your fears, and celebrating the arrival of your little one.

Man’s Best Friend
It might seem somewhat strange when you really take a moment to think about the sight of a dog being present at a birth. Some may view this scenario as unsanitary or perhaps even chaotic. Yet, these loyal creatures possess an innate sense of what the moment entails. Often, they appear anxious and excited, their emotions bubbling beneath the surface. Sometimes, you can even catch a glimpse of it reflected in their eyes as they attempt to conceal their feelings from the laboring mother. They intuitively know that change is on the horizon, and they eagerly anticipate the arrival of their new companion, their new best friend, and a little person they will take on the instinctive role of protector for. Many times, you will find yourself witnessing a sweet puppy dog coming forward to offer a gentle lick or a reassuring sniff in between the laboring mother's contractions. It is an incredibly beautiful thing to observe during the calm and quiet moments of a home birth. After that brief moment of connection, the dog often retreats to its designated spot in the corner or just on the other side of the bedroom door, patiently waiting. They remain in a state of anticipation, eager to be invited back in, waiting for the moment when they will be told it is okay to come and check on the precious new baby. Birth is a profound gift that is shared by all living beings, both human and animal. We all experience similar physiological changes and hormones as we welcome our babies into the world. A home birth is truly a gift, and being able to share this sacred experience with your animal companion, who can provide comfort and support throughout the intensity of labor, is nothing short of pure bliss. This is just one more compelling reason to consider having your baby at home, surrounded by the people and animals you cherish and who love you in return.
Why is Midwifery Important?
It all begins with an idea.
Midwives build community by connecting families, empowering mothers, and providing support during pregnancy and birth. They create safe spaces for discussions, share resources, and offer workshops on holistic childbirth. Through home visits and community events, midwives foster trust and belonging, encouraging women to share experiences and learn together. This support enhances individual birth experiences and strengthens community bonds, promoting care and understanding around birth and parenting.
Community-based midwifery care is essential for several reasons. It builds trust and familiarity between midwives and families, allowing women to feel secure in their unique backgrounds and birth preferences. This approach offers accessible, personalized care, addressing barriers like transportation and healthcare access, and providing support in a comfortable environment.
Additionally, community midwifery focuses on education and empowerment, enabling families to make informed decisions through workshops and prenatal classes. This proactive strategy promotes maternal health and strengthens community bonds.
Finally, community midwifery celebrates diverse birth experiences, nurturing individual narratives and fostering a culture of acceptance. In summary, community-based midwifery care fosters trust, accessibility, empowerment, and inclusivity, ensuring every woman can achieve her desired birth experience.
